On May 30, the Nebraska Institutional Development Award Program (IDeA) Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) program welcomed 26 undergraduate students from across Nebraska as they embark on their summer research experience at Creighton University, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Below, Jaysa Hoins, talks about her INBRE experience.

What should we know about you?
I am going to be a junior at Doane University, where I am majoring in biology, minoring in Spanish and participating in track and various other activities.

Has science always been a part of your life?

I really didn’t start to enjoy science classes until I got into high school.

How is it important to you?

Science is important because there are so many opportunities that can come from it. I decided to major in biology because there are so many different career paths you can take.

Why did you choose to participate in the INBRE program?

I decided to apply for the INBRE program because I felt it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. This program helps give us exposure to research and can help us determine if research is something we want to do as a career.

What do you hope to gain from the program?

I hope to gain valuable research experience while working alongside some of the top researchers at UNMC.
