On May 30, the Nebraska Institutional Development Award Program (IDeA) Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) program welcomed 26 undergraduate students from across Nebraska as they embark on their summer research experience at Creighton University, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Below, Bailey Hallgren-Meehan talks about her INBRE experience.

Tell us about yourself. Who are your heroes?
I currently just finished my sophomore year at Nebraska Wesleyan University, where I major in biology and play basketball. While I don’t have any specific heroes, many of my prior and current athletic coaches have motivated me to reach my greatest potential both on the court and in academics.

What are your career goals?
My career goal is to go to veterinary school and also acquire an M.D. or a M.D./Ph.D.

How did you become interested in science?
My dad is a researcher at the Boys Town National Research Hospital, so science has always been a big part of my life and excited me from a young age.

What do you hope the INBRE program will do for you?
I think the INBRE program will be a great opportunity for me to learn hands-on from talented researchers and make new friendships.

How do you see science evolving over the next 20 years?
I believe science will evolve in a way to help keep the earth healthier and cleaner for everyone, as long as we put in the effort to do so!
