Cardiologist John Spertus, M.D., will speak at the upcoming UNMC College of Medicine Research Retreat, to be held from 2 to 7 p.m. June 1 in the Truhlsen Campus Events Center on the first floor of the Sorrell Center.

Dr. Spertus is the Lauer/Missouri Endowed Chair and professor of medicine at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he serves as clinical director of outcomes research at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute.

“Dr. Spertus has made enormous contributions to outcomes research and the improvement of cardiovascular care. His presentation will stimulate discussion on ways clinical research can lead to cost-effective and evidence-based treatments,” said Shelby Kutty, M.D., Ph.D., co-chair of the event.

He has served on numerous national committees for the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, American Medical Association, National Quality Forum, Medicare and United Healthcare.

He founded the Cardiovascular Outcomes Research Consortium and CV Outcomes, a non-profit corporation dedicated to advancing health care quality and outcomes research in cardiovascular disease and Health Outcomes Sciences, a biotechnology start-up to support the implementation of evidence-based, personalized medicine throughout the country.

New grant funding available

Brad Britigan, M.D., dean of the UNMC College of Medicine, has announced that there will be new grant opportunities made available to attendees of the June 1 UNMC College of Medicine Research Retreat. More information will be available at the retreat.

Dr. Spertus has devoted his career to improving the quality and patient-centeredness of care. His research focuses on methods for assessing patients’ health outcomes, measuring health care quality, and the use of information technology to guide medical decision-making based on risk-prediction models so that treatment can be safer, more cost-effective, evidence-based and patient-centered. His primary focus in the translational research enterprise is at the interface of patient care.

“Dr. Spertus will be able to share his insights on methods for measuring health care quality and for guiding medical decision-making based on prediction models,” said Howard Fox, M.D., Ph.D., co-chair of the event.

“It will be very interesting to hear from Dr. Spertus his experience participating in governmental and industry trials in the design and evaluation of patient-centered outcomes,” said Brad Britigan, M.D., dean of the UNMC College of Medicine.
