Insect mating behaviors topic of June 5 Omaha Science Cafe

Entomologists Jody Green, Ph.D., and Jonathan Larson, Ph.D., will discuss the science behind bizarre insect mating behaviors, at the next Omaha Science Café at 7 p.m. on June 5 at the Slowdown, 729 N. 14th St.

Dr. Green is an extension educator with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with the Nebraska Extension office in Lancaster County. She is an urban entomologist specializing in insects that really bug people, such as bed bugs, ants, cockroaches, termites, centipedes, ticks and spiders.

She delivers insect-related information through Twitter @JodyBugsMeUNL, in newsletters, on television and the radio, and through presentations, workshops and podcasts with her pest friend, Dr. Larson.

Dr. Larson is the Nebraska Extension entomologist for Douglas and Sarpy counties. He received his bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and graduated from the University of Kentucky with his doctorate.

He provides education and entertaining entomological assistance for audiences of all ages, as well as practical workshops for professional practitioners in the Omaha area.

Dr. Larson deals with structural pest problems, but his specialty is lawn and landscape pests. You may recognize Dr. Larson from "Backyard Farmer," where he is a regular expert panelist in the "Bug Chair" answering viewer's gardening questions.

He can be found on Twitter @JLarson_UNL or @arthro_podshow and via podcast at: Arthro-Pod arthropod.blogspot.com.

Science Cafés involve a face-to-face conversation with a scientist about current science topics. They are open to everyone (21 and older) and take place in casual settings like pubs and coffeehouses. Each meeting is organized around an interesting topic of conversation. A scientist gives a brief presentation followed by a Q-and-A period.

Pizza will be provided for the first 50 people. For more information about Science Cafes, go to www.unmc.edu/sciencecafe.
