It’s everyone’s job to ensure online safety at work

It’s everyone’s responsibility to keep our organization safe and secure. It’s more important than ever to be certain we are educated in the world of cyber security and we apply it to our work.

In this week’s article, we will focus on cyber security in the work environment and how we can educate, train and become more aware while emphasizing risk management.

In securing online safety at work, it’s important to understand and use the same techniques as mentioned in this month’s earlier article. Work devices, such as computers and phones, should be used with the same care as you would with personal devices, if not more. Cyber attacks on work devices could lead to compromised accounts, stolen bank information and much more, as seen in many recent news articles where large organizations have been hacked.

Here are some tips to think about to stay safe:

  • Watch out for scams and phishing attacks.
    • Cyber criminals love to trick employees at organizations. Be leery of suspicious emails, phone calls, etc. These criminals may try to ask you for personal information and obtain the credentials to your accounts through a convincing email or even a phone call. Very often these criminals may pretend to be your IT support line or another trusted colleague in their method of obtaining the information they want. Approach each situation with caution and report any suspicious activity to IT Helps. You can simply use your Outlook toolbar to report a suspicious email.
  • Create complex passwords.
    • Use complex passwords to keep your accounts safe. Using a mixture of characters, numbers, capital and lower-case letters when creating a password makes it more difficult for an online criminal to crack.
  • Once again, always be aware.
    • Be aware of what you do when surfing the web, receive emails, phone calls, etc. Don’t trust sites or emails/phone calls you are not familiar with. And if there’s any doubt, please contact IT Helps.

Take this week’s quiz and test your knowledge.
