UNO food pantry available to UNMC students

UNMC is collaborating with the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) and the Maverick Food Pantry to make the resource accessible to UNMC students who may be facing food insecurity.

“Our students face challenges of many kinds while pursuing their health professions training at UNMC,” said Philip Covington, Ed.D., UNMC’s assistant vice chancellor for student success. “While we cannot solve all of those challenges, food insecurity is one we can certainly address. This collaboration with the UNO Maverick Food Pantry will make a tremendous impact for our students.”

It will be a very simple process, said Andrew Faltin, J.D., of the office of student success. UNMC students will fill out a form and be able to select items from the food pantry. Students can select up to 10 items and use the service twice a week.

“UNO’s food pantry gets donations, and they’ve spent a lot of time creating options that are organic, culturally sensitive and address dietary needs,” Faltin said. “They also offer the ability to get non-perishable non-food items, things like toothpaste.”

After filling out the form, students will have easy access to the food pantry within 24-48 hours, and also will be offered options for how to get to UNO, Faltin said.

“We also want to let faculty and staff know because they might have a greater understanding of the needs of our students,” Faltin said. “Some of our international students, for example, can’t get access to federal financial aid, and so they could be at greater risk for food insecurity.”
