Gary Yee, Pharm.D., has been named the next associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, pending approval by the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.

Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dele Davies, M.D., announced the appointment Wednesday. Dr. Yee’s appointment will begin on July 1.

“Dr. Yee is ideally suited to take on the role of associate vice chancellor,” Dr. Davies said. “He brings a variety of valuable leadership experiences in research, compliance-related matters and a strong understanding of academic-related matters and academic governance.”

Dr. Yee is a professor of pharmacy practice and science and associate dean for academic affairs in the UNMC College of Pharmacy. He completed his B.S. in pharmacy at the University of Washington, his Pharm.D. at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, and post-doctoral training at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

After serving as associate dean in the College of Pharmacy for 10 years, Dr. Yee had announced last year his intention to step down as associate dean. When the associate vice chancellor position opened up, he decided to apply.

“The associate vice chancellor of academic affairs is a good fit for my strengths and experience, and I look forward to supporting Dr. Davies and joining his administrative team,” Dr. Yee said.

Dr. Yee is a fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and a board-certified oncology pharmacist.

Before accepting his current position, he held positions at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Florida. He also completed a sabbatical at the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Yee has been involved in oncology practice, education, and research for more than 30 years. He first became interested in oncology while working in a research laboratory at the University of Washington. Dr. Yee has published more than 90 publications in peer-reviewed journals and his research findings have been published in several prominent journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine and the Lancet.

Dr. Yee also is one of the editors of “Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach,” a textbook, now in its 10th edition, used in nearly all schools of pharmacy. His research has been supported by numerous sources, including the National Institutes of Health. He has served as a member of guideline panels of several professional oncology groups, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.

Dr. Yee has served as an elected officer in numerous professional organizations and is a past president of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. At UNMC, he has served for many years on many education and compliance-related committees, including the Education Council, and the UNMC Compliance Committee.

Dr. Davies thanked Rowen Zetterman, M.D., who will be retiring from the position on June 30 for his very strong leadership and contributions to academic affairs over the years. He also thanked the search committee members for its work in helping to select Dr. Yee.

“Dr. Yee’s knowledge, expertise and many roles in research and education — including as an editor — will have prepared him well for the associate vice chancellor position,” Dr. Zetterman said.
