The Healing Arts Program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center/Nebraska Medicine recently opened a new exhibition, "Amy Westover: Time Untethered," in the gallery space on Level 1 of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. The exhibit will remain on display through Oct. 4.

Westover is a glass artist, print maker and designer from Buhl, Idaho.

The work for this exhibition explores cosmological themes in works on paper and kiln-formed art glass. Her work is inspired by scientific fields such as astronomy, quantum physics and mathematics, coupled with the esoteric, the mystical and the spiritual. The dichotomy of these methods is expressed through concepts of duality and the use of multiples with similar forms and imagery.

She creates a record of light and time, while capturing a snapshot of the infinite from a recreated image by the Hubble Space Telescope or the perspective of a microscopic eye from a slide specimen of meteor dust. Using a combination of reactive glass powders, colors and foils on the glass creates "reaction" effects during the firing process. The results are both intentional and out of the artist's direct control.

"It is my intention to create work that expresses a sense of expansion and life-affirming evolution for the viewer," Westover said.

Westover also is the artist of a new sculpture that will be installed on Level 2D of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center this summer. This work, titled "On Rays of Time," represents three sunbeams made of cast glass.
