3D Invent-a-Thon draws student teams from around world
Teams of high school students from Omaha, Montana and New York participated in the weeklong 2019 3D Invent-a-Thon with competition finals at the end of the week. For the first time, an international competition was held simultaneously with teams from Turkey, Singapore, China, Germany, Holland and Poland.
The event is a competition to design a 3D-printable medical device to solve a real-world science/health care problem. The challenge allows students to see the benefits of the technology. The students were asked to design and prototype antimicrobial 3D-printed solutions for long space flights. Teams could choose to design an antimicrobial medical device and/or antimicrobial tools and parts.
Prizes were awarded to two teams: Team Ignis, a homeschool team, took first prize in the category of antimicrobial medical device; and Team Space Vikings, from Omaha North High School, took first prize in the category of antimicrobial tools and parts.
The event was sponsored by the UNMC McGoogan Library of Medicine and presented by the Nebraska Science Festival, with technical support provided by iEXCEL and overall support from the biomechanics department at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Dr. Godfrey to help lead ASHG committee
Maurice Godfrey, Ph.D., professor at the Munroe-Meyer Institute, was appointed co-chair of the American Society of Human Genetics’ Public Education and Awareness Committee. The committee’s mandate is to increase human genetics and genomics awareness across all populations. This is a new and ongoing process of development given the new ASHG strategic plan.
UNMC SHARING Clinics team with Panera
Panera at 344 N. Saddle Creek Road will be donating a portion of purchases made between 4-8 p.m. on Nov. 21 to the SHARING Clinics. Purchasers must bring a paper or electronic copy of this flyer, or use the code “PRFUND” when ordering online. A portion of the sale proceeds then will be donated to the SHARING Clinics, which strive to enhance the well-being of the greater Omaha community by providing high-quality, low-cost health care and human services to those in need.
BHECN to celebrate 10th anniversary
The Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska (BHECN) will hold an open house celebrating its 10th anniversary on Nov. 5 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at its 4470 Farnam St. location. Desserts and punch will be served; parking is available during the reception in the lot to the north of the main entrance to the BHECN building.
