International and domestic travel update

Following weeks of careful health data study, UNMC will soon update current university-related travel restrictions for faculty, staff, and students.

University-related domestic travel can resume Wednesday, July 1. Travel should be carefully considered and should be limited to essential travel. For business travel within the U.S., travel will need to be approved in advance by the responsible vice chancellor or senior vice chancellor.

Current university-related international travel restrictions will continue at least through Friday, Aug. 21. International travel policies are subject to change as university officials continue to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic up to and through Aug. 21.

As university-related domestic travel resumes, the following current travel guidance will remain in place:

  • Any proposed exceptions for university-related travel will need to be approved in advance by the responsible vice chancellor or senior vice chancellor.
  • Personal international travel is highly discouraged.
  • Personal domestic travel should be carefully considered. COVID-19 cases and deaths have been reported in all 50 states, and the situation is constantly changing. Because travel increases your chances of getting infected and spreading COVID-19, staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others from getting sick.
  • All faculty, staff, and students returning to UNMC’s campus should self-monitor, if possible using the 1-Check COVID mobile app (on Android and iOS devices).
  • All students, faculty, and staff returning from international travel will need to observe a 14-day self-quarantine while following CDC and Douglas County public health guidelines.

Additional information on UNMC’s original domestic travel policy, which was updated May 22, is available on the Coronavirus Resources website.

Study abroad planning is continuing for Spring and Summer 2021; however, travel is contingent upon relaxed CDC and U.S. Department of State travel guidance. Faculty, staff and students will be alerted to any travel status updates.

Future updates to the current university-related travel policies for domestic and international travel will be communicated through the necessary channels as information is made available.
