Med center cytotechnologists provide free cancer screenings

Nebraska Medicine/UNMC pathologists and cytotechnologists partnered with Charles Drew Health Center, Inc. and Methodist Health System to provide free, same-day cancer screenings for women in the community without insurance. The event took place Sept. 26.

“Women shouldn’t have to go years without a mammogram or pap smear,” said Ana Yuil-Valdes, MD, assistant professor with the UNMC Department of Pathology and Microbiology. “See, Test & Treat begins with a pathologist who recognizes the need in his or her community.”

See, Test & Treat is a national program from the College of American Pathologists Foundation that provides similar screenings around the country.

“Cytology has always been behind the scenes in women’s health care,” said Troy Matthias, cytotechnologist lead.

“The event gives us an opportunity to serve women who do not have a means to be screened under normal circumstances.”
