UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, and Kim Kanellis of the Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute in Omaha, present Dr. Truhlsen with a giant birthday card on his 100th birthday.

On Nov. 13, dozens of UNMC leaders, employees and students gave Stanley M. Truhlsen, MD, a birthday he won’t forget on Nov. 13. Donning face masks, they stood outside the Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute in Omaha for a “drive-by” birthday tribute for Dr. Truhlsen’s 100th birthday.

Dr. Truhlsen, who grew up in Herman, Neb., is a retired, well-known Omaha ophthalmologist, philanthropist and UNMC professor of ophthalmology, who has lived through the Great Depression, several wars and has seen many changes at UNMC through the years.

See video of the event.

Holding large “Happy Birthday” signs, employees and students waved as his family drove him by the well-wishers. Dr. Truhlsen was presented with a giant birthday card by the director of the institute, Ron Krueger, MD, and UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD.

Campus blood drive set for Dec. 3

UNMC is hosting a Red Cross blood drive from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 3 inside the Student Life Center in the Center for Healthy Living gym. Please consider donating and asking others to do the same.

The Red Cross will be testing donor blood for COVID-19 antibodies. If you test positive, indicating that you have had the virus, the Red Cross will contact you to let you know.

The Red Cross has an electronic scheduling system which will be used for this drive. You can schedule an appointment for the drive here. Click on “Find a Blood Drive” and search by date or enter “UNMCHealthyLiving.”

In addition to a Red Cross staff requirement to wear face masks at all drives, it is now required that donors wear a mask as well. It is recommended that all donors bring their own masks, but masks will be available onsite for those without.

Donors will enter the Student Life Center at the lower level in the southeast corner of the building by the card access offices. Walk-ins will not be accepted — donors must pre-register.

If you are having any problems with the website, contact Peter Pellerito at 402-559-5253.
