How did you fall in love with infectious diseases specialty:

Getting to medical school was all about following in my grandfather’s footsteps and trying to do good like him. I respected him the most. Once there, the infectious diseases (ID) specialty was a great fit for me. I just had to find the right mentor to encourage me to pursue it. During my internal medicine residency, I met an enthusiastic ID attending who was on his way to give up his “real doctor” status just to go back and acquire more training in the field. I will never forget his colorful explanations of Pneumococcal and E. Coli pneumonia. He was as influential for my career as the ID Titans that I met later. Years later, I still am driven by the enthusiasm of the beginner.

You never get bored or complacent as an ID physician. It’s not organ-specific, it’s always challenging, it ties various medical fields together, and there is no such thing as “I’ve seen it all.” It involves intellectually challenging detective work, and it is very rewarding to see a severely (acutely) ill patient getting back to normal life.

Memberships:

  • Infectious Disease Society of America
  • HIV Medicine Association

Three things people don’t know about me:

  • I am a volunteer swim official. Since swimming gave so much to my kids, I became involved to give back to the swimming community. Years later, I am a Nebraska and national official and enjoyed volunteering at Olympic Swim Trials in Omaha.
  • I like photography.
  • I like chess.
