U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood will deliver the ninth annual Anna Marie Jensen Cramer Memorial Lectureship on Sept. 13.

U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood, of the 14th Congressional District in Illinois, will deliver the ninth annual Anna Marie Jensen Cramer Memorial Lectureship on Sept. 13 from 12:15-1:15 p.m. CT (11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. MT).

"A Fireside Chat about Maternal Morbidity and Mortality in Communities of Color" is the title of her presentation, which will focus on causes of racial and ethnic disparities in maternal mortality and morbidity rates and policies being developed to address these issues.

The lecture, intended for nurses and other interested health care professionals, will be broadcast via Zoom and can be accessed here.

Rep. Underwood serves on the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, the House Committee on Appropriations and the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee. She co-founded and co-chairs the Black Maternal Health Caucus, which elevates the Black maternal health crisis within Congress and advances policy solutions to improve maternal health outcomes and end disparities.

Before election to Congress, Rep. Underwood worked with a Medicaid plan in Chicago to ensure high-quality, cost-efficient care. She served as a senior advisor at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), helping communities across the country prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters, bioterror threats and public health emergencies. As a career public servant at HHS, she helped implement the Affordable Care Act — broadening access for those on Medicare, improving health care quality and reforming private insurance.

She is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Johns Hopkins University.

The lecture offers 0.75 contact hour under American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation criteria (Course ID: 20CN115).
