Joann Schaefer, M.D.

Joann Schaefer, M.D., director of the Nebraska Health and Human Services System Department of Regulation and Licensure and the state’s chief medical officer, will be the guest speaker at the first-ever speaker series event for the newly formed UNMC Delegates program.

Dr. Schaefer was appointed to her current position in September 2005. Before that she was an associate professor in the department of family medicine at Creighton University Medical School.

At this inaugural event, Dr. Schaefer will speak to the delegates regarding public health in Nebraska.

The UNMC Delegates Program is a grassroots advocacy program comprised of people who are willing to advocate on behalf of UNMC to federal and state representatives. The program was rolled out in August and currently is composed of more than 160 alumni, students and friends of UNMC, as well as faculty and staff.

Members only

The quarterly speaker series is only open to members of the Delegates Program. Visit www.unmc.edu/dept/unmcdelegates to become a delegate.

The UNMC Board of Counselors, an advisory group of community and business leaders from across the state, sponsors the program.

This free program will use e-mail to communicate with the delegates regarding issues of importance to UNMC. More specifically, delegates will receive informational e-mails regarding congressional and state legislative developments and will be called to action when crucial issues arise.

Aside from email communication, members will be invited to attend an annual dinner as well as delegates-only quarterly events, such as the speaker series with Dr. Schaefer, on Dec. 6.
