Pfizer pharmaceuticals recently awarded the UNMC Center for Continuing Education and the Section of Diabetes Endocrinology and Metabolism a grant for $30,000.

These educational grant funds will allow UNMC to offer an accredited continuing education conference on management of diabetes and complications on March 30 at the W.H. Thompson Alumni Center on the UNO campus.

“UNMC was selected for this grant based on the high caliber of patient care, the faculty and programs offered here, as well as the excellent research and physician education,” said Paul Plofchan, a district manager with Pfizer.

“This type of grant makes it possible to be able to offer continuing education conferences to health care professionals such as the one we will be sponsoring in March,” said Brenda Ram, continuing education coordinator with the Center for Continuing Education.

Not only does it help keep registration costs down, said Lynn Shipman, M.D., but it allows health care professionals access to the latest in diabetes treatment and prevention methods.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to update our health professionals,” Dr. Shipman said.

The conference is aimed at physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, residents and fellows, she said.

The conference will cover what is new in diabetes care, review standards of care for Type 2 diabetes and identify recent developments in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes with an emphasis on the management of complications.

John Bantle, M.D., professor of medicine in the division of endocrinology and diabetes at the University of Minnesota will give the keynote address.

Other speakers include Jennifer Larsen, M.D., Gerald Groggel, M.D., Sanjay Singh, M.D., Pierre Fayad, M.D., and James Lane, M.D.

The registration fee for the conference is $25 and continuing education credit is available for various healthcare professionals.
