James Lane, M.D., always wanted to lead a diabetes center. Now he will.

Dr. Lane, associate professor in the section of diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism at UNMC, has been named director of The Nebraska Medical Center Diabetes Center.

“I’m really looking forward to being director,” Dr. Lane said. “It’s always been something I’ve wanted to do.”

Dr. Lane takes over for Jennifer Larsen, M.D., who recently was named the College of Medicine’s first associate dean for clinical research.

Dr. Larsen set a high standard during her tenure, Dr. Lane said. It’s a standard he plans to continue.

“Like Dr. Larsen, I want this diabetes center to be regionally and nationally important,” Dr. Lane said. “I also want it to be a center where scientists are asking and seeking answers to really important questions about diabetes care.”

Anyone looking for a ringing endorsement for Dr. Lane need only check with his predecessor.

“I can think of no person better able to take on the responsibilities of the director of The Nebraska Medical Center Diabetes Center as it continues to evolve as a leader of diabetes education, care and research,” Dr. Larsen said of Dr. Lane, who has served for some time as associate director of the center since arriving at the medical center in 1998.

Lynell Klassen, M.D., professor and chairman of the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, echoed Dr. Larsen’s comments about Dr. Lane.

“Dr. Lane is a natural choice for this position,” Dr. Klassen said. “I’m certain he will pick up where Dr. Larsen left off and that the diabetes center will flourish under his direction.”

In his time at UNMC, Dr. Lane has established the young adult diabetes clinic, served as local principal investigator for several national trials for prevention of type 1 diabetes and has initiated many studies that explore the causes of diabetic complications.

He also is president of the Heartland Chapter of the American Diabetes Association Nebraska affiliate.

“Through these and other leadership roles, he has been involved in developing new patient and health care provider education programs, clinical care initiatives and research all focused on improving diabetes care throughout Nebraska and the region,” Dr. Larsen said.

Dr. Lane and his wife, Pascale Lane, M.D., the Helen Freytag Professor of Pediatrics in the UNMC College of Medicine, have a 19-year-old daughter, Jennifer, and a 14-year-old son, Tim.
