Creighton basketball player Josh Dotzler delivers the mail on Friday to Patty Mata, an administrative assistant in the UNMC Chancellor’s Office. Dotzler — a junior guard for the Bluejays — is working for the campus mail service for the summer, delivering mail to Wittson, Poynter, Eppley and Bennett Halls.

Dotzler is working at UNMC this summer, delivering mail to Wittson, Poynter, Eppley and Bennett Halls.

One of his stops includes the Chancellor’s Office in Wittson Hall. Bob Bartee, vice chancellor for external affairs, joked that he and administrative assistant Patty Mata have been offering Dotzler tips on improving his game before the upcoming season.

“We have been working with Josh on his footwork and fade-away jumper since he began delivering mail to us,” a smiling Bartee said. “He still hasn’t perfected my little running hook shot, but we’ve got all summer for that.”

Dotzler said he’s working at UNMC to pick up some extra money for the summer. He’s following the lead of former Creighton guard Johnny Mathies, who in 2005 carried mail on the same route Dotzler now treks.

Dotzler, a junior-to-be who has been a steady contributor in the Bluejay backcourt each of his first two seasons, said he’s not taking classes this summer so he can focus on working out in preparation for the upcoming season.

With the departures of Nate Funk, Anthony Tolliver and Nick Porter — three seniors who keyed Creighton’s run to the postseason — the Bluejays have their work cut out for them this coming season, Dotzler said.

“It’s going to have to be a real team effort,” Dotzler said.
