Dr. Swarts named volunteer faculty member of the year

Carol Swarts, M.D., receives the 2007 Volunteer Faculty of the Year award from College of Medicine Dean John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., during the college’s recent convocation.

Long-time volunteer, Carol Swarts, M.D., a radiation oncologist from Crestview Hills, Ky., has received the 2006 Volunteer Faculty of the Year award.

A 1959 graduate of the UNMC College of Medicine, Dr. Swarts has been a volunteer faculty member in the department of radiation oncology since 1999.

She has provided the radiation oncology department with relief services and has been a strong supporter of the neuroscience research program at UNMC.

“I am humbled and honored to have been selected by my peers for such a special award for enjoying my chosen profession,” Dr. Swarts said.

Dr. Swarts has participated in many medical missions to such places as the Congo, Vietnam, Haiti, Brazil and India.

A native Nebraskan, Dr. Swarts has a strong belief that giving back to society is a privilege and a responsibility.

“Dr. Swarts dedication to working with the medical students is admirable and commendable. It amazes me to see someone like Dr. Swarts continue to practice and to return services to the medical school where she has trained,” her nominator said. “She is an asset and ambassador for the University of Nebraska Medical Center.”
