Heineman approves 4 percent increase in NU’s 2008 budget

The University of Nebraska will receive a 4 percent budget increase in 2008 and a 4.1 percent increase in 2009 according to a budget signed by Gov. Dave Heineman on Monday.

The increases for the NU budget — which are significantly higher than those Heineman proposed earlier this year — are good news for UNMC and the university system as a whole, said UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D.

“We are delighted that the governor supported the University budget without using his veto authority,” Dr. Maurer said. “I know the faculty and staff are grateful for his show of support. I also would like to thank the Appropriations Committee and the Legislature for all they have done to provide a budget to the university, which approaches its target.”

Earlier this year, Heineman proposed increasing the university budget by 1.1 percent in 2008 and 2.2 percent in 2009. University leaders and supporters urged Heineman to reconsider his budget proposals.

Monday’s news was proof the university’s advocates were heard, NU President James B. Milliken said.

“I am very pleased that the governor approved the budget for the University of Nebraska,” Milliken said. “I believe this action reflects the views of many Nebraskans who have weighed in, expressing their support for this investment in the University of Nebraska — which is truly an investment in Nebraska’s future.”

Dr. Mauer and Milliken extended thanks to all who voiced their support of the university during the budgeting process.

“While this budget does not meet all the university’s needs,” Milliken said, “it is a fair compromise that will help keep tuition more affordable and will help ensure that the momentum the university has enjoyed can continue.”
