The Durham Outpatient Atrium will once again be filled with music today at noon as musicians from the Omaha Symphony and Omaha Chamber Music Society perform a concert in honor of the memory of the late Hobart Wiltse, M.D., former professor pediatrics at UNMC.

The concert is part of the ongoing concert series “Music as Medicine,” of which Dr. Wiltse was a big supporter.

“Dr. Wiltse loved this program and believed it to be a much needed respite for patients and their families,” said John Benson, M.D., professor of internal medicine.

Dr. Wiltse retired from the department of pediatrics in 2002, after 37 years on the faculty.

He was well known for his caring demeanor and for giving his time to students and patients.

Dr. Wiltse said “these concerts offer our health care workers, students and patients a very nice one-hour diversion” when asked about the series in February.

He died in June after battling lung cancer.

The concert is free and quiet lunches are welcome.

“The goal of ‘Music as Medicine’ is to provide an interlude of quiet reflection or joyous listening through quality performances,” Dr. Benson said. “In an environment of emotionally-demanding, high-tech service to seriously ill patients, an hour of enjoyable distraction offers real benefits.”
