UNMC scientists are conducting research that is critical to Nebraska, said state Sen. John Harms of Scottsbluff after a recent tour of the medical center.

Donned in honorary white coats, Harms and his wife, Patricia, had breakfast with campus officials including Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., and visited campus laboratories and learning centers.

Harms also met with UNMC Eppley Cancer Center Director Ken Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., and Robert Muelleman, M.D., professor and chairman of UNMC’s Department of Emergency Medicine.

“I’m really impressed with what I see here,” Harms said after visiting the Durham Research Laboratory of Diane Allen-Gipson, Ph.D., assistant professor in the pulmonary, critical care, sleep and allergy section. “From the research to the cutting edge patient care being offered here, UNMC is truly becoming a world-class organization.”

Dr. Maurer thanked Harms, who represents District 48, for taking time to visit the campus.

“We’re always glad to have the chance to show our lawmakers what is going on at UNMC,” Dr. Maurer said. “We couldn’t do what we do without the Legislature’s support. I’m glad Sen. Harms and his wife could come to Omaha to see the medical center for themselves.”
