Today is the final day to RSVP for a Tuesday event aimed at increasing awareness of research funding opportunities with the Department of Defense (DoD).

The event, called “DARPA Day,” is sponsored by UNeMed and the UNMC Vice Chancellor for Research and will take place at noon in the Durham Research Center Auditorium.

The high point of the event will be a presentation by Brett Giroir, M.D., director of the DARPA Defense Sciences Office. DARPA stands for Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which is the DoD’s central research and development organization.

DARPA Day will highlight funding alternatives in the face of decreased NIH funding and will include information useful to many medical center researchers, said Paula Turpen, Ph.D., UNMC’s director of research resources.

“It turns out the Department of Defense has quite a bit of money to spend on research,” Dr. Turpen said. “Many of our investigators might not know about the breadth of biomedical research areas funded by the DoD.”

DARPA is interested in high-risk and high-payoff research that may bring dramatic advances for traditional military roles and missions.

Some research areas DARPA is particularly interested in include:

  • Biological warfare defense;
  • Tactical biomedical technologies;
  • Restorative biomedical technologies;
  • Maintaining human combat performance; and
  • Biologically inspired platforms and systems.

Dr. Giroir’s presentation will describe the history and mission of DARPA, how to secure DARPA funding, future DARPA research objectives and how to become a DARPA program officer.

Preceeding Dr. Giroir’s talk, Brian Detter will present a brief overview of research programs complimentary to DARPA such as the Army Research Office. Detter is a government affairs consultant in the Washington-area who works closely with DoD entities including DARPA and other research organizations. Detter also has worked with UNMC for more than five years.
