MMI to host second-annual dance for those with disabilities

The gymnasium of the UNMC Student Life Center, at 40th and Jones Streets, will be transformed into a winter wonderland Saturday for the second-annual Munroe-Meyer Institute dance for individuals with disabilities.

The C. Louis Meyer Foundation Board, City of Omaha, The Ollie Webb Center Inc., and the Omaha Down Syndrome Parents Network are sponsoring the dance.

This is the first community partnership between the four organizations.

“We are really excited about this dance,” said Rick Boldt, president of the C. Louis Meyer Foundation Board. “For those of us involved with either adults or children with special needs, we know how much they love to get together and how much they love music, so we are trying to have several dances a year where they and their caregivers can get together and have a good time.”

Judy Walker, executive director of student services, helped coordinate volunteers for this year’s dance and said the response from UNMC students about volunteering to help with the dance was outstanding.

“Our UNMC students are really stepping up for this event,” Walker said. “I’ve gotten e-mails and calls from students expressing interest for many reasons. One student has a brother with severe autism, another is hoping to match in pediatrics. The response has been overwhelming.”

Local rock and roll band Bittersweet will provide music again this year. Free pictures will be taken as a memento for attendees and light snacks will be served.

All employees of UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center are invited to attend.

The dance is a winter formal and dressy attire is recommended.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the dance begins at 7 p.m. The cost for the dance is $7 per person.
