Simply put — a new geriatric center on the UNMC campus will be built because of the generosity of Omaha natives Lori and Paul Hogan.

That was the word Wednesday from UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., during a news conference to announce a major donation the couple made to help fund the new geriatric center.

“We are deeply indebted to Lori and Paul Hogan for their gift,” Dr. Maurer said.

The Hogans are co-founders of Home Instead Senior Care, the largest provider of non-medical home care to seniors in the world.

Pending regents’ approval, the new geriatric center will be called the Home Instead Center for Successful Aging.

The two-level center will occupy 25,300 square feet and will cost nearly $10.2 million. It will be built at the intersection of Leavenworth Street and 38th Avenue at the present site occupied by the Annex 4, 5 and 6 buildings on the east end of the UNMC campus.

Construction is slated to begin in September with completion in August 2009. The building will be funded entirely with private donations including the Hogans’ gift.

“We have high hopes and aspirations for the Center for Successful Aging,” Lori Hogan said. “We are very grateful for this unique opportunity and partnership with UNMC.”

The Home Instead Center for Successful Aging will create physical space for both the sections of geriatric medicine and geriatric psychiatry, which currently include seven geriatric physicians, five geriatric psychiatrists and one geriatric psychologist.
