Million-step Monday – Carstens takes command, editor loses track of shoe

With 602,528 steps for the month of January, Julie Carstens has stepped up and stepped into the Gold Shoe.

Carstens’ January step total is a record for the monthly Gold Shoe competition.

“It almost killed me to get there though,” she said. “I got sick with only four days left to go in the month, so I had to really bust my butt to make up for all those ‘lost’ steps!”

Unfortunately, a certain discombobulated UNMC Today editor was unable to get his hands on the Gold Shoe in time to get a picture of Carstens and her upgraded footwear. (EDITOR’S NOTE: The Gold Shoe has been secured and UNMC Today will have a picture of Carstens and the shoe in next week’s Million-step Monday story.)

Jill Daley, an office associate in the department of ophthalmology and visual sciences, logged 238,605 steps in January to bring home the Silver Shoe, which had become very comfortable after spending nearly four months in Carstens’ office at the Munroe-Meyer Institute.

A picture of Daley and the Silver Shoe will be included next week, too.

As for Greg McFadden of the Health Professions Tracking Center, who had won the previous two Gold Shoes, he missed the January competition to welcome home a newborn child. Congratulations Greg!

Those looking to compete for the February Gold Shoe have until Monday, March 3 to send in monthly step totals. February’s winners will be announced on Monday, March 10.

The following UNMC employee has recently reached a 250,000-step marker in the 1 Million Step Challenge. Send an e-mail to today@unmc.edu with your name, department and tell us what step milestone you reached and we’ll post it on the list.
