UNMC physicians to present original works at May 10 reading

A note from the editor

A longer feature about “The Seven Doctor’s Project” will be run in UNMC Today next week. Also, in the interest of proper disclosure, please note the Chuck Brown referred to in the article is indeed the story’s writer. While the story is not (completely) an act of shameless self promotion, we’d all really like it if you marked your calendars and came out for the reading on May 10!

Four UNMC physicians who have taken part in a creative writing workshop on campus over the past few months will present some of their work on Saturday, May 10 during a reading in Omaha.

The reading will be at the Bookworm in Omaha’s Countryside Village on 87th and Pacific streets and will run from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

The UNMC physicians featured in the reading will be:

  • Lloyd Holm, D.O., associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology;
  • Molly O’Dell, M.D., volunteer professor of pediatrics;
  • Debra Reilly, M.D., associate professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery; and
  • Byers “Bud” Shaw, Jr. M.D., professor and chairman of the department of surgery.

The reading is the culmination of a project led by Steve Langan, an acclaimed poet who teaches at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

“I wondered what would happen if I could assemble physicians and encourage them to begin, return to, or expand creative writing projects,” said Langan, who will use observations from the project to help him in his Ph.D. thesis.

As part of what Langan called “The Seven Doctors Project,” seven UNMC physicians were pared with local writers in a workshop setting.

The doctors and writers met weekly from February through April to share, discuss and critique each others’ work.

“Everyone who has been involved in the project has enjoyed doing the work and the interaction,” Langan said.

The reading also will feature presentations from Omaha-area writers Lindsey Baker, Denise Brady, Chuck Brown, Todd Robinson, Rebecca Rotert and Mark Scott.

Other UNMC physicians who took part in the project but who will not read on May 10 are:

  • Greg Bociek, M.D., associate professor of oncology/hematology;
  • Bill Lyons, M.D., associate professor of geriatrics; and
  • Jim Sorrell, M.D., associate professor of psychiatry.

The reading also will serve as a fundraiser for the not-for-profit Backwaters Press. Donations will be accepted at the reading.
