The School of Allied Health Professions held its first pre-commencement ceremony May 1 at Joslyn Art Museum’s Witherspoon Concert Hall.

The afternoon ceremony brought together all 172 graduating students from the ten allied health programs, including four people who earned their degrees online.

Motivational speaker Cy Wakeman delivered the keynote address, which was titled “Succeeding in Challenging Times — the Next Generation of Health Care Leaders.”

“It’s not the individual who produces great outcomes,” Wakeman told the students. “It’s great teams that produce great outcomes.”

She reminded the students that their future patients won’t judge them on their technical skills but on how well they help the patients.

They can do this, Wakeman said, by valuing what other health care professionals bring to the team, gaining a higher perspective and trusting one another’s intentions.

These things, she said, will allow them to successfully operate among a team of health professionals.

The pre-commencement ceremony was followed by a reception in the Storz Fountain Court at the museum.
