The Nebraska affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation has awarded UNMC researcher, Surinder Batra, Ph.D., a $50,000 grant for breast cancer research.

“I am very thankful to the Komen Foundation for supporting our work on breast cancer,” said Dr. Batra, a professor in the department of biochemistry and molecular biology.

The overall objective of Dr. Batra’s breast cancer program is to develop an innovative approach to overcome the current acquired resistance of breast cancer tumors to Herceptin-therapy. Herceptin is a common drug used to fight breast cancer.

“The Nebraska Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is extremely pleased to be able to make this grant to Dr. Batra,” said Beth Whited, president of the Susan G. Komen for Cure, Nebraska Affiliate board of directors. “The research his team has undertaken shows real promise to reduce aggressiveness in late stage cancers. We’re proud to be associated with his innovative laboratory.”
