UNeMed to give $10,000 research award

picture disc.UNeMed, UNMC’s technology transfer arm, is gearing up for the annual Innovation Awards.

This year’s festivities will take place the week of Oct. 20-24 with various special events being held each day.

To kick off this year’s special events, UNeMed will award $10,000 in unrestricted research funding to the inventor or group of inventors submitting the most promising invention between July 1 and Oct. 3.

“We realize that there are many expensive steps between the conception of a good idea and putting a new product in the market place,” said Michael Dixon, Ph.D., vice president and chief operating officer for UNeMed. “The $10,000 award is just one small way for us to try to help move good ideas from the bench to the bedside.

“UNeMed is very excited to have the opportunity to offer this award and allow the inventors to further develop a unique discovery.”

To be considered for the funding, recipients must submit a completed New Invention Notification (NIN) form, which can be found on the UNeMed Web site.

Only fully completed NINs will qualify for the award. UNeMed will consider the potential benefits to the public good as well as the patent and market potential when selecting the most promising invention. All UNMC faculty, students and staff are eligible.

The $10,000 research award will be announced and presented at the Innovation Awards on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. in the Durham Research Center Auditorium. For more information, contact UNeMed at 559-2468 or unemed@unmc.com.
