UNeMed and UNO announce collaborative grant program

picture disc.UNeMed Corporation, the technology licensing arm for UNMC, and the University of Nebraska at Omaha College of Information Science and Technology (IS&T) have established a joint grant program for researchers, students and staff.

The Innovation Grant Program formed by UNeMed’s CEO and president, James Linder, M.D., and IS&T dean, Hesham Ali, Ph.D., is intended to encourage innovative collaborations between the two institutions. Up to $25,000 is available.

“Software is a fundamental component of many tools for biomedical research and clinical care,” Dr. Linder said. “We believe that encouraging collaboration between faculty at UNMC and UNO’s College of Information Science and Technology will lead to fantastic opportunities.

“We are pleased to invest proceeds from earlier UNeMed licensing activity into programs that may develop future intellectual property.”

Members of research collaborations that support innovative and novel applications, utilizing both IT&S and biomedical principles, are encouraged to apply. Applications must include investigators from both UNMC and IS&T and be completed by Jan. 30.

Collaborations that lead to new extramural research funding, and/or new intellectual property with commercial potential will be evaluated for the grant by a joint committee.

“We are very excited about our partnership with UNeMed,” Dr. Ali said. “The integration of information technology into biomedical research is quickly emerging to be one of the most important areas of applied research in our time.

“Opportunities for innovation in this interdisciplinary field are exciting and diverse. This partnership would give us the opportunity to provide our researchers seed grants to further develop their research activities and move faster towards attracting external funding and developing innovative products.”

Winners will be announced in February.
