Rowen Zetterman, M.D., professor of internal medicine and the associate dean for veterans affairs at UNMC and Creighton University, has been named dean of the Creighton University School of Medicine.

Dr. Zetterman, who has been on the UNMC faculty since 1976, will assume his new position with Creighton on Jan. 5.

“Dr. Zetterman has served UNMC well in all areas. He is an excellent teacher and an outstanding clinician with particular expertise in liver disease and liver transplantation,” said John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., dean of the UNMC College of Medicine. “As chief of staff for the VA medical center, he had a major impact in taking the VA to a new level and enhancing its relationship with UNMC. He has been most innovative and has made a number of bold changes at the VA.

“I wish him well in this new position and look forward to working with him. In the past, I have always met regularly with the dean of the Creighton School of Medicine, and I’m sure this will continue with Dr. Zetterman. We’re friends and have been colleagues over the years with our common interest in liver disease. He is widely recognized at UNMC as a skilled administrator. His leadership skills will serve him well at Creighton and should result in an even stronger bond between our two institutions.”

Dr. Zetterman has held several appointments with Creighton, UNMC and the VA system. He has served as chief of staff for the Veteran’s Affairs (VA) Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System since 2002.

“Creighton University is extremely fortunate to have someone with the leadership and breadth of experience in academic, research and clinical disciplines needed in our school of medicine to meet an increasingly competitive and demanding health care environment,” said Robert Heaney, M.D., interim vice president for health sciences at Creighton. “As an internationally known medical leader, Dr. Zetterman is at the top of his game and will be instrumental as we move our health sciences agenda forward.”

Dr. Zetterman has held several leadership positions in professional organizations and received numerous awards including the Berk/Fise Clinical Achievement Award, which he received earlier this year.

The award is the highest recognition from the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG). He served as ACG president in 2000. In 2007, he received the Alfred Stengel Memorial Award for Outstanding Service from the American College of Physicians (ACP). This award, given by the nation’s largest medical specialty organization and the second largest physician group in the United States, recognizes loyalty and exceptional contributions to the ACP’s mission.

He is editor emeritus of Digestive Diseases: Current Concepts in Research and Practice and The American Journal of Gastroenterology and is past president of the Nebraska Medical Association and the Metro-Omaha Medical Society

Dr. Zetterman graduated from Shickley Public High School in Shickley, Neb. He earned his medical degree from UNMC in 1969.
