Before our panelists take their final cracks at picking winners during the 2008-2009 Nebraska football season, I want to publicly thank them for participating in these weekly articles.

They have been gracious participants in what was — for me anyway — a fun way to end the week.

They also were pretty good at picking winners and after each correctly picked NU win to beat Colorado in late November — their respective records are now:

  • Robert Zatechka, M.D., 11-0
  • Jeffrey Hill, M.D., 10-1
  • Lisa Runco and Chad Kelsay, otherwise known as Team Runco/Kelsay, 9-2.

So thanks guys and gal and let’s see what you think about NU’s Gator Bowl tilt with Clemson on Thursday.

Dr. Zatechka says, “After a slow start to the season amid coaching upheaval, Clemson has played great defense and a balanced offense. Look for them to try and establish the running game with their tandem of C.J. Spiller and James Davis at running back and an offensive line that has improved over the latter half of the season. The Tiger’s defense has had very good statistics during the season as well but much of it was accomplished against a slew of ACC foes with weaker offenses than Nebraska. Look for NU to try and establish the ground game as well (hopefully with Roy Helu getting the bulk of the carries) but will likely need to rely on the short passing game to help chew up the clock. On defense, if NU can bottle up Clemson’s backfield and force a more one-dimensional game, NU should have no problem winning.” NU 33, Clemson 17

Dr. Hill says, “I think Nebraska will beat Clemson. The Huskers are pumped up and this game will help NU with recruiting in Florida.” NU 27, Clemson 24

Runco and Kelsay say, “Rumor has it that Clemson is looking at this as a ‘big’ game for them. Eerily similar situations exist between these two teams — the Huskers were 8-4 this season, Clemson was 7-5. Both have new coaches (Bo Pelini for the Big Red and Dabo Swinney for the Tigers) who seem to have have brought back the toughness and swagger to their respective teams. Clemson looks at the Big 12 as the best conference in the country this year and would kill to win this on the national stage, which would start off the 2009 season on the right foot … and NU feels the same way. Many analysts are calling this one a toss-up and Clemson is counting on what they think is our big weakness, our defense. So if Bo can get the Blackshirts to prove them wrong, combined with the Ganz/Swift/Peterson/Helu scoring machine, the Huskers should have a great New Year’s Day.” NU 34, Clemson 24
