Poster focuses on workplace etiquette

A new poster being distributed by UNMC Employee Relations stresses the importance of workplace etiquette.

Using the word “etiquette” as an acronym, the poster lays out guidelines regarding proper conduct in the workplace.

“There are behavioral standards that must be upheld to maintain a comfortable and hospitable workplace,” said Carmen Sirizzotti, division director of UNMC employee relations. “This poster emphasizes and reinforces these standards.”

The poster has been posted at several spots around campus and also is being distributed at new employee orientation. The poster reads as such:

Environmental noise is sometimes difficult to work around. Monitor the volume of your conversations, phone calls and radio.

Treat everyone with respect. Be aware that your words and behaviors may affect people of different backgrounds in ways you did not intend.

Initiate and preserve a workplace where appreciation of others is the standard.

Quality communication lends to effective teamwork. Avoid gossip; it only creates barriers and mistrust in the workplace. Keep in mind that gossip equals breaking trust.

Understand that not everyone can tolerate strong perfumes, lotions or potpourri.

E-mails that contain questionable language and jokes are inappropriate for the workplace.

Take pride in a clean work environment. Keep your office area clean and any area you use during the day, such as restrooms and break rooms. Recycle aluminum cans and paper in designated containers. Wipe countertops, throw away your trash and remember to leave the area in a sanitary condition.

Treat all UNMC equipment with respect and return borrowed equipment to the original owner.

Excel in making your workplace environment pleasant for everyone.
