At the faculty practice at the UNMC College of Dentistry in Lincoln, there was never enough room.

There wasn’t enough space in the waiting room for families to wait for appointments.

And when someone in a wheelchair came to see the dentist, several of the chairs in the waiting room had to be pulled out to accommodate the wheelchair.

There wasn’t enough room in the operatory area and there were not enough operatory chairs. If there were more patients than chairs, the faculty dentists had to search for an empty dental chair in the student clinics.

But that has changed.

The remodeled clinic has been expanded from 1,500 to 3,000 square feet.

“The beautiful new advanced practice clinic is a dramatic improvement for the college,” said UNMC College of Dentistry Dean John Reinhardt, D.D.S. “It’s very important that our clinical faculty have a state-of-the-art facility to treat patients.”

The UNMC Advanced Practice Clinic, which averages 200 patient visits a week, opened in the newly renovated space on Feb. 16.

And the dentists working there couldn’t be happier to be in their new space.

“Our practitioners definitely have a nicer area and better equipment to work with,” said Dennis Kent, D.D.S., director of the clinic. “The technological improvements have made a huge difference in ease and efficiency of delivering care.

“New x-ray units, intraoral cameras and chairside computers are being added as some of the upgraded technology in the clinic.”

In addition to the improved environment, another strength of the college’s faculty dental practice is the wide range of expertise.

“We draw on the expertise of so many different specialists who are not just treating patients in the faculty practice but teaching the next generation of dentists and dental specialists in the school as well,” Dr. Kent said.
