Live United ’09 — Nebraska AIDS Project a crucial player in HIV/AIDS care

picture disc.The Nebraska AIDS Project and the UNMC HIV Clinic work hand-in-hand to care for the region’s HIV/AIDS patients.

While the clinic provides medical care, the Nebraska AIDS Project provides what Sue Swindells, M.B.B.S., calls “wrap around care.”

That means project personnel help HIV/AIDS patients find housing, get transportation to doctor’s appointments and meet many other basic needs.

“It would be difficult if the AIDS Project wasn’t here, that’s for sure,” said Dr. Swindells, who directs the UNMC HIV Clinic.

Case managers with the Nebraska AIDS Project meet weekly with HIV clinic personnel to make sure patients get the care they need.

The assistance provided by the Nebraska AIDS Project – which receives support from the United Way – is particularly important because a large portion of those who have HIV/AIDS live in poverty.

“And many others live in conditions that are only slightly above the official poverty standards,” Dr. Swindells said.

Other services offered by the the Nebraska AIDS Project include:

  • Free, confidential testing;
  • Diversity and bilingual resources;
  • Latino outreach and bilingual testing;
  • HIV/STD prevention for men;
  • AIDS education and training; and
  • Street outreach.

Dr. Swindells and the HIV Clinic staff are grateful to the Nebraska AIDS Project for the strong support they provide to the thousands of Nebraskans who have HIV/AIDS.

“The Nebraska AIDS Project is a powerful ally for us in our work to care for those who live with this disease and they also work hard to help stop the spread of HIV/AIDS,” Dr. Swindells said. “We are fortunate that they are here for us.”
