Dr. Mueller honored for interim dean tenure

In the spring of 2008, Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., asked a departing Jay Noren, M.D., who should serve as the College of Public Health’s Interim Dean.

Dr. Noren, the college’s founding dean who left UNMC to take over as president of Detroit’s Wayne State University, didn’t hesitate.

“He said, ‘Keith Mueller (Ph.D.) is the best person for the job.’ He was right,” Dr. Maurer said Wednesday at a reception to honor Dr. Mueller for his service as interim dean.

Dr. Mueller – who took over as interim dean in August 2008 — kept the young college on a rapid developmental path while he also tended to his duties as one of the nation’s leading experts in rural health and health care reform, Dr. Maurer said.

“He represented the college very, very well,” Dr. Maurer said.

Ayman El-Mohandes, M.B.B.Ch., M.D., M.P.H., who relieved Dr. Mueller as he took over as full-time dean on Sept. 1, said he was awed by Dr. Mueller’s efforts as interim dean.

Dr. Mueller kept the college on course in such manner that Dr. El-Mohandes was able to submit the college’s application for accreditation during his first week on the job.

Dr. El-Mohandes also said he was envious of Dr. Mueller for the overwhelming love and respect he garnered from the college’s faculty and staff.

“It’s been a pleasure and a great experience to be in this role as we continued to build the college in a very rapid manner.”

To those who gathered for the reception, Dr. El-Mohandes said, “The love I see in your eyes for him is something that I’d like to acquire over time.”

Dr. Mueller thanked Dr. Maurer for the opportunity to lead the college on an interim basis.

“It’s been a pleasure and a great experience to be in this role as we continued to build the college in a very rapid manner,” Dr. Mueller said.
