Teledentistry took center stage Sept. 28, when U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack stopped by the Community Action Partnership of Western Nebraska (CAPWN) in Gering, Neb.

Using videoconferencing, Vilsack listened to David Brown, Ph.D., an associate dean for academic affairs, Kim McFarland, D.D.S., an associate professor of oral biology, and David Riggenbach, a multimedia engineer, all with the UNMC College of Dentistry, describe how teledentistry is used to make life easier for the people living in the panhandle.

Dr. Brown demonstrated how intraoral cameras are used to help dentists at the college evaluate and diagnose patients in Western Nebraska.

“We have been able to save patients from rural communities’ considerable time and money by utilizing this technology,” Dr. Brown told Vilsack.

The secretary of agriculture complimented the College of Dentistry on the work being done and took considerable notes during our discussion, Dr. McFarland said.
