UNMC, The Nebraska Medical Center, UNMC Physicians, Clarkson College and Private Practice Associates collected 10,408 pounds — or about five tons — of food and household supplies during their recent food drive.

Departments that met the UNMC public relations challenge of collecting more than 12 grocery sacks of food during the drive include:

  • Pharmacology and experimental neuroscience (unbagged, but at least 12 sacks);
  • Family medicine (25 sacks);
  • Health services research and administration (12 sacks);
  • Health promotion, social and behavioral health (12 sacks); and
  • Epidemiology (20 sacks).

The College of Public Health receives the unofficial UNMC Food Drive Championship for 2009 as its departments combined to collect 1,300 pounds of food.

The food drive ran from Nov. 4 through Nov. 18. The collected goods went to the Omaha Food Bank, which aims to help the nearly 53,000 Douglas County residents who live below the poverty line.
