In the spirit of the season, UNMC Today takes a look at some of the holiday activities medical center employees and students have taken part in recently.

On Dec. 15, Peter Coccia, M.D., vice chairman of the department of pediatrics, donned a Santa suit, delivered gifts and visited with pediatric patients at The Nebraska Medical Center. The Santa visit was part of a holiday party for pediatric patients and their families.

Carol Ann Ern, residency coordinator II in the department of anesthesiology, and her significant other sang Christmas carols at local nursing homes.

Anita Jaynes, a certified nurse midwife in the ob/gyn department, played harp with the Omaha Harp Circle on Monday at the Mormon Trail Center’s annual holiday open house.

As they do each year, students in the School of Allied Health Professions’ Radiation Science Technology Education program decorated the Ronald McDonald House for the holidays. This year, about 20 students, as well as a few faculty members, decorated six trees inside the house.

Several groups and individuals participated in this year’s UNMC Adopt-a-Family project, which benefited families from Monroe Middle School. Participating groups included:

  • Orthopaedic surgery;
  • The Eppley Institute Cancer Research Graduate Program;
  • Cardiothoracic surgery and
  • Family medicine.

Tracy Rheault, an administrator in cardiothoracic sugery, and her two daughters worked with a local cheerleading troop to participate in Toys for Tots and to acquire gifts for residents of Fontenelle Nursing Home.

The folks up at McGoogan Library took part in several holiday activities including their annual holiday mug sale to raise money to purchase books for the Fontenelle Elementary School Library.

The “McGoogan Elves” also held an in-house gift drive for the Ronald McDonald House and they sent gifts to faculty and staff at all UNMC locations around the state.

The Munroe-Meyer Institute Support Staff Group provided 17 families with $50 gift cards and MMI cookbooks. The group also donated two software programs to JP Lord School.

The MMI genetics department, along with the NU foundation, raised $615 to support a family at JP Lord School. The money helped purchase presents and a $250 grocery gift card.

Robin Jaeckel of the College of Public Health and her family helped care for a friend who fell from his roof while putting up Christmas lights. Jaeckel’s family brought the man meals, helped with bandages and put up the rest of his Christmas lights.
