Video of panel discussion on grant guidelines now available online

Video of the Dec. 4 Clinical and Translational Research Seminar, which featured a panel discussion about new National Institutes of Health grant guidelines and formats, can be viewed online.

About 120 scientists and staff members attended the seminar, which was moderated by Jennifer Larsen, M.D., director of the UNMC Center for Clinical and Translational Research.

The panel and members of the audience were composed of several researchers who have reviewed grant applications under the new guidelines or have submitted shorter grant proposals similar to the proposed new NIH format.

These people discussed strategies that might be helpful to investigators who plan to submit NIH proposals, Dr. Larsen said.

“While no one knows the full implications of the new review guidelines and the significant changes in the NIH application that will be initiated this month, there were several points that were made that would be valuable to anyone submitting an NIH application in the near future,” she said. “We plan to revisit this topic as we all have more experience with the new application.”

The panel members were:

  • Surinder Batra, Ph.D., department of biochemistry;
  • Michael Brattain, Ph.D., Eppley Cancer Center;
  • Thomas Jerrells, Ph.D., department of pathology;
  • Debra Romberger, M.D., department of internal medicine;
  • Joe Sisson, M.D., department of internal medicine; and
  • Constance Visovsky Ph.D., College of Nursing.
