Pedal to support Haiti on Feb. 12

On Feb. 12, Prairie Life Fitness Center at Midtown Crossing will host “Strength for Haiti,” an indoor cycling challenge that will raise money for the UNMC Haitian Relief and Outreach Fund.

The event runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the fitness center’s spinning studio. The fitness center is at 31st Ave. and Farnam St., Suite 4101. A live percussionist and a DJ will provide music for the participants. Bicycles can be sponsored for a minimum of $100 and riders can be sponsored for a minimum of $50.

All proceeds will go to the UNMC fund, which is administered by the University of Nebraska Foundation. The fund supports UNMC’s volunteer efforts in Haiti and offsets the personal costs accrued by medical center volunteers.

UNMC recently welcomed home its first group of volunteers, who spent a week treating earthquake victims in Haiti. A second group of volunteers is expected to deploy to Haiti next week.

“What we’ve learned from volunteers is that so much more work needs to be done, but the key is to be strategic and make sure the right people go at the right time,” said Magda Peck, Sc.D., associate dean for community engagement and public health practice in the UNMC College of Public Health and a key organizer of UNMC’s Haiti response efforts.

UNMC aims to raise $100,000 for the fund in order to provide long-term, strategic relief in Haiti, where a long recovery effort is needed after the Jan. 12 earthquake that killed hundreds of thousands of people and wounded countless others. About $25,000 has been raised for the fund to this point.

“I wanted to thank Prairie Life for doing this fundraiser,” Dr. Peck said. “We have a long list of volunteers ready to help in Haiti, where the need for assistance will be great for a long time. This event will support our wonderful volunteers in their desire to provide a needed service to suffering people.”
