Spoken word performance will celebrate Black History Month

It dates back to the shores of West Africa.

Spoken word is a unique oral tradition deeply embedded in African-American culture and community.

Thursday, five of Omaha’s best poets and spoken word artists from Omaha’s Loves Jazz and Arts Center (LJAC) will present a unique performance at UNMC.

The group will, through performance, explain the spoken word tradition and why it is a vital part of black experience. In addition, they will showcase the different spoken word styles and stories passed down from generation to generation.

The program is part of the 2010 Diversity Lectures and Cultural Arts Series, which is co-sponsored by UNMC’s Human Resources Department and UNMC’s Employee Diversity Network (EDN).

The performance starts at noon in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater. Free lunch will be provided to the first 40 attendees.
