A national firm will assist a 19-person UNMC committee in the search for a new full-time dean of the College of Medicine.

“The College of Medicine dean is one of the most important positions at UNMC and the search committee will work diligently to ensure the right person is selected to fill this vital role,” said UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D.
The college has grown significantly in the past 10 years and now has:
- More than 640 full-time faculty;
- 19 departments; and
- More than $75 million in extramural research funding.
Others on the committee include:
- Ken Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., director, UNMC Eppley Cancer Center;
- Courtney Fletcher, Pharm.D., dean, College of Pharmacy;
- Glenn Fosdick, president and CEO, The Nebraska Medical Center;
- Karen Honeycutt, faculty senate president;
- Andrew Klutman, student senate president;
- Michael Leibowitz, Ph.D., director, Munroe-Meyer Institute;
- Don Leuenberger, vice chancellor for business and finance;
- Thomas Lynch, M.D., surgery professor;
- David Mercer, M.D., surgery chairman;
- Kyle Meyer, Ph.D., associate dean, School of Allied Health Professions;
- John Mitchell, M.D., president, College of Medicine Alumni Association;
- Gerald Moore, M.D., senior associate dean for academic affairs, College of Medicine;
- Cory Shaw, CEO, UNMC Physicians;
- Michael Sitorius, M.D., family medicine chairman;
- Sonya Smith, Ed.D., J.D., associate vice chancellor of academic affairs;
- Virginia Tilden, D.N.Sc., dean, College of Nursing;
- Irving Zucker, Ph.D., cellular/integrative physiology chairman; and
- Gail Walling Yanney, M.D., College of Medicine alumnus.
The position opening will soon be advertised in leading medical journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine as well as other publications.
The new dean will replace John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., who in June will step down after a seven-year term as dean.
Rod Markin, M.D., Ph.D., the David T. Purtilo Distinguished Professor of Pathology, senior associate dean for clinical affairs in the College of Medicine and president of UNMC Physicians, will serve as interim dean.
Carl Smith, M.D., chairman of obstetrics and gynecology, will take over Dr. Markin’s UNMC Physicians leadership responsibilities on an interim basis while Dr. Markin serves as interim dean.
