National search for new College of Medicine dean underway

A national firm will assist a 19-person UNMC committee in the search for a new full-time dean of the College of Medicine.

The committee, led by David Crouse, Ph.D., associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, and the firm, Korn/Ferry International, recently started the national search.

“The College of Medicine dean is one of the most important positions at UNMC and the search committee will work diligently to ensure the right person is selected to fill this vital role,” said UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D.

The college has grown significantly in the past 10 years and now has:

  • More than 640 full-time faculty;
  • 19 departments; and
  • More than $75 million in extramural research funding.

The position opening will soon be advertised in leading medical journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine as well as other publications.

The new dean will replace John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., who in June will step down after a seven-year term as dean.

Rod Markin, M.D., Ph.D., the David T. Purtilo Distinguished Professor of Pathology, senior associate dean for clinical affairs in the College of Medicine and president of UNMC Physicians, will serve as interim dean.

Carl Smith, M.D., chairman of obstetrics and gynecology, will take over Dr. Markin’s UNMC Physicians leadership responsibilities on an interim basis while Dr. Markin serves as interim dean.
