Friday Husker Pick’em – Texas

Eric Crouch — who won the Heisman Trophy in 2001 as a quarterback for Nebraska — knows a thing or two about Texas.

Crouch was behind center the last time NU beat the Longhorns — 22-6 in the 1999 Big 12 Championship Game.

The Longhorns have since won five straight games against the Huskers.

Many think NU will stop that streak on Saturday, when the Huskers will be led by speedy quarterback Taylor Martinez, who reminds an awful lot of people of Crouch himself.

Crouch has become a steady advocate for UNMC. Each year he lends his name and time to the Walk and Roll for Disabilities, which supports programs at the Munroe-Meyer Institute.

Below, he and our usual panelists — Jeffrey Hill, M.D., Lisa Runco and Chad Kelsay, and Kyle Ringenberg, M.D. — talk Nebraska and Texas.

Crouch says, “Nebraska will win this game because our offense led by Taylor Martinez will be able to move the ball on a sub-par Texas defense. Nebraska’s defense, however, is not sub par. It will hold the Longhorns’ offense to minimal points.” NU 27, Texas 17

Dr. Hill says, “This game scares me a bit. Texas will be bringing it. They will make Martinez throw the ball. The Husker D is playing well. All I know for sure is that you better strap yourself into your lounge chair and get ready for some major collisions. This will be a fun game to watch.” NU 28, Texas 17

Team Runco/Kelsay says, “We have not yet seen a defense as good as Texas’ yet this year, although they’ve played poorly in previous games. Our defense will continue to get better each week, so we’re not worried about their offense causing too much commotion. With all that being said, the team, coaches and fans will be too much for Texas.” NU 27, Texas 13

Dr. Ringenberg says, “I’ve watched several Texas games and they have not shown they are a good football team yet. That is not to say they don’t have strengths. They have a secondary that rivals ours and their front seven will make things difficult on us at times. Their offense has not shown that it should be feared. I expect our defense will outplay theirs and our offense will make enough plays to win.” NU 27, Texas 10

This one will be won up front, although I do think Brandon Kinnie and Rex Burkhead will make big plays for NU. NU 21, Texas 7

Nebraska will have a good showing on both sides of the ball. Nebraska Defense will make some big plays. Gilbert will get sacked several times. Watch for Nebraska Defense to get some turnovers and score! Nebraska 31 Texas 21.
I agree with Patty, Yankees to win the World Series!

I think it'll be closer and more mistake-ridden than it should, with NU getting a late insurance TD to make it 17-6 Huskers. Be loud and proud, Husker fans, but maintain civility, too.

NU will roll!! NU 42 UT 10
