Thursday Husker Pick’em – Washington, again

Congrats to Jeff Hill, M.D., for winning the Husker Pick’em season title for a second consecutive year.

Rematch facts

Since 1978, Nebraska has played in two rematch games. NU lost 31-24 in the 1979 Orange Bowl to Oklahoma, whom the Huskers had beaten 17-14 about a month earlier.

In 1999, Nebraska beat Texas 20-6 in the Big 12 Championship Game, avenging an earlier 24-20 loss to the Longhorns.

Dr. Hill put the season title out of reach with a shrewd and painful pick of Oklahoma over Nebraska in the Big 12 Championship Game.

“I feel weird about this one, but I have to go with OU,” Dr. Hill said before correctly picking the Sooners to beat NU.

The other panelists, Kyle Ringenberg, M.D., and the team of Lisa Runco and Chad Kelsay, called for NU wins in the title game.

So heading into tonight’s Holiday Bowl against Washington — a rematch of that September squeaker that the Huskers won 56-21 — the panelists’ records are:

  • Dr. Hill – 11-2
  • Team Runco/Kelsay – 10-3
  • Dr. Ringenberg – 9-3

Before we get to their final picks for 2010, let’s take a second to thank the panelists for participating. Great job, guys and gal! We’ll see you in the Big Ten!

Dr. Hill says, “Not much to say really. We should be ready. I’m looking forward to next year.” NU 35, Washington 17

Team Runco/Kelsay says, “While it’s a disappointing bowl, and an even more disappointing opponent, we still have an 11 win season to play for, which is extremely impressive. On the flip side, Washington was embarrassed by us earlier this year. They have everything to play for. Our offense seems not to click when Taylor Martinez is not running on all cylinders (or when Shawn Watson is calling the plays). It might be a close one unless something changes on the offensive side of the ball.” NU 17, Washington 13

Dr. Ringenberg says, “There is some concern about whether or not the team will be up to play. I think that the staff will have the team ready. Washington will put up more of a fight but a healthier NU team will look better on offense.” NU 37, Washington 21
