In UNMC Today’s Student Spotlight, we get to know some of these students, who are training to become tomorrow’s health care professionals.

Today we meet Addison Killeen, a fourth-year College of Dentistry student.

  • Name: Addison Killeen
  • Hometown: Lincoln
  • Year/Program: Fourth-year dental student

What is your best memory from your time at UNMC?

My best memories are from working in Haiti with a couple classmates and Dr. Jim Jenkins and Dr. David Blaha from the dental college. It was great to be able to use my skills to help people and also have a great time doing it. There’s such a need down there and although we work long days, it’s very relaxing.

Our four brand values are leadership, commitment to excellence, working together and being a trusted resource. Pick one and tell us a time you witnessed it embodied at UNMC.

I think working together is one I’ve seen a lot around the College of Dentistry. Freshman year professors were always willing to sit down with us and take extra time to help us figure out a topic. Now that we’re in clinic, nothing is different. There are so many professors, both part-time and full-time, who will stay late to help us out or show us new ways of doing something. One of my first professors at UNMC also said that students and teachers are a team working together to get students to learn. I think that makes Nebraska very special compared to other schools I’ve heard about.

List three things people may not know about you.

  • If I get out of clinic early on a summer day, I’ll probably be at the lake windsurfing. I love it. There’s such a rush being totally controlled by the wind.
  • Woodworking and construction is a big hobby for me. Recently I’ve built a wine rack and redone my fireplace.
  • I really like ethnic food and sushi. If there’s a night to go out, I’ll definitely drive to Omaha to go to Sushi Blue.
