Kim Schmit-Pokorny
This week, we learn more about Kim Schmit-Pokorny, nurse manager and case manager in the section of oncology/hematology.

  • Name: Kim Schmit-Pokorny
  • Hometown: Bellwood, Neb.
  • No. of years at UNMC: 25

What is your best memory from your time at UNMC?

My favorite is when we have patients who come to UNMC from other states or countries. They come with concerns about why they are being sent by their physician to “this medical center in a small town in Nebraska — instead of one of the big city medical centers.” Once they experience the wonderful care from every person at UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center, they understand and are totally convinced that this is the best place to be. I have seen this over and over throughout the years — it makes me very proud to work here!

Our four brand values are leadership, commitment to excellence, working together and being a trusted resource. Pick one and tell us a time you witnessed it embodied at UNMC.

Every day, I see my colleagues working together to “make it happen” for the transplant patients. I especially see their strong commitment to helping patients on days in which we are really busy or unexpectedly short staffed — everyone pulls together to take care of whatever is necessary for the patients.

List three things people may not know about you.

  • I grow irises, starting with about 30 varieties that my grandmother gave me and expanding every year. I also collect anything with irises on it (pictures, dishes, clothing, jewelry, etc).
  • I think there should only be four food groups: wine, bread, cheese and — my favorite — chocolate.
  • I am fortunate to have a wonderful husband, Kevin, and two fantastic children, Chris (eighth grade) and Megan (fifth grade).
