Employees honored for terms of service

A lot has changed since 1971, which is when UNMC employees Gary Svanda, director of campus security, and Margaret Sieber, dental assistant specialist in the College of Dentistry, started at the medical center.

Svanda and Sieber were among those recently recognized for five-year increments of service at the recent Employee Service Awards Dinner.

Below Svanda and Sieber reflect on the biggest changes they’ve seen in their 40-year careers at UNMC.

“Besides going from riding a horse and buggy to work to an automobile, I would say being able to communicate instantly with others via email has been the biggest change I’ve seen.” — Svanda

“It’s hard to pick just one thing but I would probably pick the computer and email. I work in pediatric dentistry and sometimes I need to contact students or get important information to them. The user calendar on the computer tells me when they are in clinic and in what chair they are working. Email makes it possible to send the same information to multiple students. It sure beats posting notes on a bulletin board and waiting for them to contact me.” — Sieber
