Pierre Fayad, M.D., Reynolds Centennial Professor at UNMC and director of the Stroke Center at The Nebraska Medical Center, has been named president of the American Heart Association Midwest Affiliate Board of Directors.

Wednesday’s regional breastfeeding conference, hosted by the Olson Center for Women’s Health and sponsored by UNMC Physicians, drew more than 360 attendees the Qwest Center Omaha — a record for the annual meeting.

Josh Haworth, doctoral student in environment health, occupational health and toxicology in the College of Public Health, received a $3,500 NASA Nebraska Space Grant Fellowship to support his dissertation work. He studies the relationship between how babies and adults sway and where they look while in a seated position. Much of his work is focused on children with autism.

Sheila Ryan, Ph.D., director of international programs in the UNMC College of Nursing, participated in a panel discussion on international health programs at Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. Health Equity Summit in Washington. The Institute for the Advancement of Multicultural & Minority Medicine conducts the seminar to assess the nation’s progress in addressing inequities in health and reducing health disparities.

With a net of $1.49 million, the 2011 Nebraska Cattlemen’s Ball in West Point shattered the event’s previous record for most money raised by $487,000. The total topped the previous high of just more than $1 million raised at the 2010 event in Kearney.
